Tonight we had some time set aside to explore a technology of interest that was related to our upcoming fieldstudy. I joined the google wave group as I was interested in seeing if it was a potential collaborative tool that I could be using with my students. I have had my google wave account for a couple of weeks but I didn't have any collaborators until tonight to see how it actually worked. Most of us just jumped in and tried to figure things out which sometimes work but not with this, the tutorials would have been a good start to our time together. We experienced more frustration than success ... it didn't help that a few people never received their invites that I sent out .... now I'm down to 18 :( Even with the problems we ran into, I'm still tempted to approach a few of my more computer savvy students and ask them to give this a try . The idea that we can embed the resulting document in a blog or on the sharepoint is very appealing.
Even without including this in my fieldstudy I would like to pursuit it with my grade 9 team as we prepare for the second half of the year with our new grade 9 curriculum. The ability to collaborate on lesson notes, quizzes and tests seems really appealing ... especially when it is so difficult to get us all in the room at the same time.
Here is the presentation that was put together to share with the cohort:
